The Toronto Transit Commission
operates by far the most extensive streetcar system in North America.
There are eleven routes, although in some cases two lines
have significant stretches of joint running.
Much of the trackage is old-style in-street running. Four
major east-west arteries through downtown have streetcar lines.
Many outbound terminals, and Union Station in center city, are by subway stops along TTC's two older subway lines.
At three
locations the streetcars delve underground for the subway transfer.
This scene is at Spadina Ave. and Queen St. W., in the western fringes of
downtown, looking toward part of the city's
skyline. Traffic, vehicular and
pedestrian, is heavy. The streetcars on the 501 Queen come every few minutes
during the day. |
