TORONTO LIGHT RAIL
In  the Rain

Streetcars approach each other in the rain in this scene from along Gerrard St. E, heading toward downtown.  The cross street at the traffic signal is at Greenwood Ave.

Toronto is one of a small number of cities on the continent that retained streetcar service all during the last century.  (Its first electric streetcar ran in 1892.)  The network was greatly contracted during the "dark" years of urban electric transit, but much of that was for a very positive development: the coming of the subway in 1954, and its later expansion.

There have been a couple of new routes introduced since 1990, and there is much reason to hope for further system extension.
