NEW YORK CITY HEAVY RAIL
Queens Outdoors

Long stretches of the subway system are outdoors in Queens, mostly on old elevated structures.  The Astoria Line (N and W trains) has only seven stations in the borough before it heads into Manhattan; this photo shows a train at the Ditmars Blvd. terminal.  Heavy-duty, electrified Boston to New York and Washington passenger rail traffic takes place nearby on the long, high approach to Hell Gate Bridge.
