NEW YORK CITY HEAVY RAIL
Church and Train, Astoria

The afternoon sun is casting a harsh glare as our train meets an Astoria-bound train not too far from the end of the line.  There is a rich mixture of ethnic cultures on the streets below.  The prominent line identification at the front of each train is helpful for the great majority of passengers who know which route they seek.  In a much earlier era two colored lamps provided coded route and line identification to those who knew the meaning of the markings.
