NEW YORK CITY HEAVY RAIL
Hints of History

The trackage and structures at and near Queensboro Plaza ooze with history.  Once upon a time there were three choices to Manhattan from here: tunnels for the IRT and BMT, and service over the Queensboro Bridge that led into Manhattan's 2nd Avenue El.  IRT and BMT trains jointly served Queens destinations on the Astoria and Flushing lines.  Bridge service ended more than half a century ago, and things have been tidied up on the infrastructure around here; but evidence of ghost connections to the past still exist.
