NEW YORK CITY HEAVY RAIL
In the Subway

Well over half of New York City's massive system is truly subway, including almost all the routes that crowd through Manhattan.  This photo is at 14th St. on the 7th Ave. Line of the former IRT, one of five north-south underground arteries that run four-track express and local service up and down much of the lower part of the island.

On this particular holiday all southbound trains were using the local track.  Crews were working on the rails at the station itself.  The action was noisy and the station announcements were difficult to understand.  Some of the waiting patrons were fairly confused.
