NEW YORK CITY HEAVY RAIL
Wall St. Station

Overhead pipes and peeling paint give some feeling for the age of the system in this view along what was historically called the IRT 7th Ave. Line.  This is not the very oldest portion of the subway -- the first underground route goes back to 1904 -- but is not too much newer than that, either.  The "W" is for Wall Street.  Many ornate station identifiers and fanciful wall decorations have been preserved, even as the Manhattan stations have been upgraded.
