The Staten Island Railway (SIR) is that borough's
single passenger line, and only operating railroad. Its route of
just over fourteen miles runs between
St. George, scene of this photo, and Tottenville,
near the southwestern tip of the borough. There are twenty-two
stations in full-time use.
The line, for a long time a division of the B&O,
has for decades now been
operated by the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) as a separate division,
apart from the massive subway system that serves the rest of the
city. |
