STATEN ISLAND HEAVY RAIL
Waiting to Leave for St. George

An active train waits for passengers for the run back to St. George in this view.  It's very late morning on a May holiday, and many people will board along the way with Manhattan as their destination.  The ferry -- glorious ride -- is free in both directions.

These cars are known as "R-44s," in keeping with how New York City identifies in many series of subway vehicles.  They were provided in the early 1970s by St. Louis Car Co.
