PORTLAND MAX LIGHT RAIL
Downtown Turnaround

This photo is also from the brief era when the Red Line ended in downtown Portland.  The train in this photo is at the waiting area adjacent to SW 11th Ave., and will soon be ready for its eastbound journey to the Airport.  There is no station immediately close to where the cars are; the last stop inbound is at Galleria/SW 10th Ave., and the first stop ahead is Library/SW 9th Ave.

This downtown loop has seen a variety of routings over the years, and has also seen periods of MAX disuse, including the present time.  The turnaround was the western end of the initial line from Gresham, before color coding was in use, and before the Westside Extension.  Then the Red Line to the Airport terminated there for a couple of years, starting in 2001.  With the coming of the Yellow Line, Interstate MAX, it became that route's terminal.  And as of when that line was rerouted along Portland Mall in 2009, no route uses this turnback in regular service.

The track running left-right across the photo belongs to the southbound Portland Streetcar, a much later addition to the transit scene in this area.
