PORTLAND MAX LIGHT RAIL
Tracks Join, City Center

A single-car Red Line train bound for the airport is about to approach a switch from City Center turnback rails in this view along SW Yamhill St.  Its next stop is Library/SW 9th Ave., the first station in the Free Rail Zone

The concept of free travel for trips totally within center city was first established in the mid-1970s for bus routes, under the term "Fareless Square."  Its boundaries were expanded to the north and east after that.   Starting in early 2010, the rules were changed, and only rail travel on the two MAX routes and the Portland Streetcar qualified in the renamed "Free Rail Zone."
