MIAMI-DADE HEAVY RAIL
At Okeechobee

Doors were open and heat was pouring into the cars at the time of this 1996 view of a train waiting to head inbound from Okeechobee, then the terminal station to the northwest.  Since that photo was taken, the line was extended one further stop, to Palmetto, in 2003.

After a lengthy time when other expansion plans went unrealized, ground was broken in 2009 for a new branch that will leave the existing route near the Earlington Heights station, northwest of downtown and six stations inbound from here.  The line will go 2.4 miles to a terminal adjacent to Miami International Airport.  That should be a major traffic generator when it opens in 2012.
