CHICAGO HEAVY RAIL
Disused Connection

The rusty rails on the middle two tracks lead to and from the State St. subway.  For many years after the subway opened in 1943 this was the route of today's Green Line trains.  Massive service changes occurred in 1993, after completion of a direct subway link to and from the Dan Ryan line.  With that change, South Side "L" service reverted to Loop routing, and this connection is no longer in regular use.

That status will change again when a current project is completed.  Non-stop service to Midway Airport will originate from a new underground station in center city.  Trains will come out of the Red Line route, up this ramp, and join with the Orange Line for the rest of the way.  The premium-fare trains will be operated by private enterprise.
