Even though the front window is very streaked, there's still a good feel here
for the power and majesty of what was once the Chicago, North Shore
and Milwaukee's high-speed right of way. There's a grade crossing up ahead, and a
green signal shows all is clear for our train's progress toward Howard St.
Soon ahead the third rail will start and the pantographs that once
were will come down.
The overhead wiring is gone now, and with it, also gone is another piece of
the nation's
electric rail history. |
