ATLANTA HEAVY RAIL
Two Main Corridors

The Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority (MARTA) provides rail service along two main corridors, which intersect at the Five Points station under downtown.   System expansion has added a second line to the north, creating both a "North" and "Northeast" service; and on the East-West Line there is a one-station spur to Bankhead branching off west of downtown.  MARTA's rail network consists of about 47 route miles.

Most of the MARTA in center city is in subway, although the East-West Line comes outdoors quite close to the heart of town.  Elsewhere on the system there are short underground segments, but much of the running is in the open.  Many of the stations, subway and above-ground, feature colorful and distinctive artwork.
