MetroLink reaches its final stop in Illinois at the
Shiloh-Scott station deep into St. Clair County. An active Air
Force base is adjacent to the line. There is an unusual secure
gate for access between the platform and the military facility.
A proposed
extension will, if built, take the line 5.3 miles further out to MidAmerica Airport.
MetroLink would then achieve the distinction of having a terminal
at airports in both directions. And that route would be a remarkable 42
miles
or so, end to end. But so far that extension, long contemplated, is
unfunded. |
