ST. LOUIS LIGHT RAIL
Crossing City Streets

When MetroLink began operation in 1993 it ended to the east at 5th & Missouri in the heart of East St. Louis.  This photo was taken from that platform a decade or so after the opening, and long after it had ceased being a terminal.

The system now goes much further out into St. Clair County, Illinois.  There are numerous street crossings in East St. Louis, both on the older and newer portions of the route.  A train's horn gets a frequent workout.

There is a high degree of monitoring on the system.  Platforms have video surveillance, and many stations -- as is the case here -- have security personnel present.
