SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT RAIL
In the Subway

This is another view under Market St., showing the Muni level of the two-tiered subway.  It's a rare city in the U.S. that supports both a light rail and a heavy rail system underground.  And much rarer still, the services are operated by different transit agencies.

Present planning will add a third underground level crossing Market St.  A new "Central Subway" will provide a route from the present Caltrain terminal area, and will cross deep under Market St. between the Muni Metro Powell and Montgomery stations.  It will then head to the north, near Union Square and to a terminal under Chinatown.
