SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT RAIL
Looking Down

This view is from the escalator at the Civic Center station, and shows trains on each Muni track.  The subway was constructed as part of the project that brought BART to the Bay Area, but the city system saw its initial service considerably later on.

The five trolley routes that remained in San Francisco through the 1960s were rerouted in phases from the surface of Market St. during 1980 and 1981.  N-Judah was the first, and J-Church, the last.  The construction period had been quite lengthy, and the detours required for the streetcar lines, and inconvenience for motorists, were the source of much frustration.

A sixth line, T-Third, was added to the subway in 2007.
