PORTLAND MAX LIGHT RAIL
Vintage Ascent

Downtown Portland lies in the distance behind car #511 in this view of it ascending Steel Bridge.  The Council Crest line that these cars honor went high up in the West Hills -- visible in the background -- to the city park bearing that name.  Service ended in 1950 on that route.

The few vehicles in the Vintage Trolley fleet, delivered in the 1990s, were manufactured by Gomaco Trolley Co. of Ida Grove, Iowa.  That company has provided various replica models to a number of locations across the country.  Some of its other units are featured on pages in this collection devoted to Little Rock, Tampa, Memphis and Charlotte.

The manufacturer tells us that these particular cars "are faithful reproductions of the 500 series car manufactured by J.G. Brill Company for the Portland Traction Company in the early 1900s."
