As elsewhere on the MAX system, a map of the nearby area
helps the arriving passenger at stations. In this case it is at the last stop
southbound.
Northwest United States has two predominant urban places, Portland and
Seattle. The populations of the two core cities are not that
different. Seattle is twenty-fifth largest in the country, and
Portland, twenty-ninth, with both having between 550,000 and 600,000 people
(2008 estimates). Their metropolitan area populations are also not
that far apart. Yet the difference in feel between the two seems
significant, at least to this observer. Seattle, even with its many
preserved and delightful neighborhoods, strives toward big-city recognition;
and Portland seems to be much more focused on its own localized identities, and on the city's
rich history and heritage. |
