MINNEAPOLIS LIGHT RAIL
Crossing Hiawatha Ave.

The inbound train in this scene negotiates the Hiawatha Ave. overpass and is beginning the downgrade that will bring it back to street level.  A bit of ripped up rail from a former Milwaukee Road freight branch is visible to the left of the line, just beyond the 28th Ave. S. road crossing.

Trains get signal priority at the various road crossings all through this area.  Traffic on Hiawatha Ave. is significantly backed up in this morning view.  Although the train route never crosses that road at grade, traffic is stopped when trains activate grade crossings nearby.  There was much tweaking of competing priorities in the first few years of the line's existence.
