Hiawatha Ave. carries the identification of Minnesota
Route 55,
which is the same route number used by the light
rail line. The road is a major commuter artery, and this view
taken during the morning rush hour shows vehicles lined up for a significant
distance waiting for the traffic signal at E. 35th St. Trains get priority
access at highway crossings along this stretch, and the system has been
faulted for failing to minimize road traffic delays.
Numerous grain elevators, served by a freight spur line, flank the eastern side of the
highway. The
"young" Mississippi River is not too far off.
