The process of getting trolleys between Main St.
and
Madison Ave. is an interesting one. Most of the line along
Madison is double tracked, but the block closest to Main
carries just a single set of rails. Switches to and from there connect only with
the through-southbound track along the trolley-only mall. Streetcars
heading onto Madison, such as #453 in this view, proceed beyond the
cross street. The motor person then gets up and moves to the other
end of the car, then proceeds back in the other direction, continuing onto the switch.
Trolleys returning to the north come along the other switch,
directly onto the southbound track for a
short stretch, and then move over to the
appropriate set of rails.
There are many old buildings in downtown Memphis, some of which are
in view along Main St. in this image. |
