PHILADELPHIA HEAVY RAIL
Near Frankford Transportation Center

The Market-Frankford Line, when one considers it, embraces a glorious range of electric urban rail transit.  At the 69th Street Terminal it meets the third-rail Norristown Line and the suburban light rail lines to Sharon Hill and Media.  The "Subway Surface" routes share the subway for about a mile under and near downtown.   The line crosses the Broad St. Subway near City Hall, and further east, intersects with that line's Ridge Spur at 8th St.  PATCO's heavy rail line to New Jersey crosses there as well.  Market-Frankford is wide gauge, unlike the other subway routes operating in the city.

Three years or so after this 2000 photo was taken the opening of a new Frankford Transportation Center brought major changes to this scene.
