CHICAGO HEAVY RAIL
Switch Along the Old "L"

The train in the distance, outbound for O'Hare, is stopped at the Western station.  Our train has passed the first of the three stops -- California -- along this old "L" section, and has Western and Damen yet to call at before it heads into the subway.

Before the subway era, the line entered downtown by a very different geographic scheme.  Instead of going underground east of what is now Damen, it curved to head south on "L" tracks paralleling Paulina, down to the Garfield Park Branch, which it then joined to reach the Loop at its southwest turn.
