CHICAGO HEAVY RAIL
"L" Under Reconstruction

At the time of this 2002 view the line to 54th/Cermak ran along a spindly elevated structure before reaching its final outbound stretch of ground-level operation.  Construction crews were seemingly everywhere then, completely rebuilding this elevated part of the line.  Meanwhile the old pillars continued to support train traffic.  And as afternoon trains arrived at California from downtown, people emerged in waves through the brick station below the tracks -- as they have for decades and decades past.
