At the time of this 2002 view the line to 54th/Cermak
ran along a spindly
elevated structure before reaching its final outbound stretch of
ground-level operation. Construction crews were seemingly everywhere
then,
completely rebuilding this elevated part of the line. Meanwhile the old
pillars continued to support train traffic. And as afternoon
trains arrived at California from downtown, people emerged in waves
through the brick station below the tracks -- as they have for decades and
decades past.
