CHICAGO HEAVY RAIL
Lake and Wells, 1982

The year was 1982.  I had just driven from the Pacific Northwest to Chicago under continuously beautiful springtime skies.  And I hadn't used a freeway anywhere between eastern Washington and the outskirts of Rockford, Illinois.

Then suddenly I was in Chicago riding the "L," the first time in many years, marveling anew at tracks crossing above the city's dense urban core, and routes diverging and joining.

This view again looks west over Lake St., and it is the older tower that appears toward the right.
