In this view an inbound streetcar is about ready to switch from the
middle of Fairview Ave. N to the short stretch of private right of way by
Lake Union Park. Across Valley St. one can see commerce, billboards, and
distant residential development and construction, as the area undergoes a major
transformation.
For many Seattle sports fans, and some others,
the prominent billboard for the NBA basketball team is likely an unpleasant
reminder. Team ownership had already announced their intention to
relocate the Seattle Sonics to Oklahoma City, which happened in the ensuing
months.
The intersection just ahead is an intensely busy one. The streetcar
juts into the cross street before reaching its short private right of way.
For decades now, long before the coming of rail, the city of Seattle has
been considering ways to revamp the traffic flow in this very hectic part of
town. |
