The docks and wharves along The Embarcadero have seen their ebb and flow of commerce over the decades.  Many of the buildings have been redeveloped for new urban uses.  Palm trees do not thrive too much further north than San Francisco, but there are numerous specimens along the route of the F-line, both in this area and along Market St.
