This is a view from the early years, 1981 on
the San Ysidro line. It was still running along a "young" right of way
then.
The old San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway handled freight service
along this route prior to light rail. Times changed, and the line
became available. The existing right of way allowed for quick and comparatively inexpensive
construction of the first San Diego Trolley line. That project
was done without federal funding.
Freight service continues during the
brief overnight hours when passenger trips are not scheduled. The
current freight operator is the San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad.
