A growing commercial zone is at the center of the Pearl
District. A retro-looking "Go By Streetcar" neon sign adorns this
building that houses, among other enterprises, the Sungari Pearl restaurant,
"Gourmet dishes from select regions in China." The rails turn
here from NW Lovejoy St. onto NW 11th Ave. for the run into downtown.
Portland has a very rich trolley car (and interurban) history, but old maps
show that this district, in its earlier incarnation, was not particularly
well served.
Current planning calls for a second streetcar route for the city, one that will continue
straight toward the camera, and then across Broadway Bridge over the
Willamette, into the Lloyd
District. At a later time the Portland Streetcar Loop is proposed to
continue south and then back across the
river, rejoining the present line at RiverPlace.
