From the early 1990s until the summer of 2009, MAX operated a heritage
streetcar route across Steel Bridge, in partnership with a non-profit organization
called Vintage Trolley, Inc. It only ran on Sunday afternoons, and not
all year-round.
As its route was entirely within what was then called the Fareless Square, there was no charge -- but
donations were welcome. The cars look authentically from a different
age, but are replicas built for the new MAX era.
In this 2008 view, taken from the front of Car #511, companion Car #512 is
coming from downtown Portland. The cars now operate elsewhere, along the Portland
Mall loop still on that one day a week.
Later in this segment there are several more photos showing aspects of its
former operation across the bridge. It is all history now. |
