NEWARK LIGHT RAIL
Pillars Underground

Modern lighting doesn't dispel the dimness of age in this underground view at Penn Station.  An outbound train lurks across the way.

The station was cluttered with construction equipment this May day in 2002.
Work was then underway to build the one mile line, opened in 2006, that quickly branches off to reach Broad St. Station, which is used by three NJ Transit commuter lines to and from Manhattan.

The newer line is known as Newark Light Rail.  There are three intermediate stations northbound, and two southbound.  And once again more than one route terminates at Newark Penn Station.
It is planned that the new route will eventually continue generally south five miles or so to Elizabeth, passing by Newark Liberty International Airport.
