The Canal St.
station on the Riverfront Streetcar is by where the much newer Canal
Streetcar trackage branches off and joins. Just beyond in this district
of intense tourist and visitor activity is the Audubon Aquarium of
the Americas. A well-used freight track has a pedestrian
crossing, with warning lights -- but with no gates. People are standing
on the streetcar tracks, or ambling across, looking in every which
direction at a time when streetcar activity seemed to have stopped
entirely for a while. Others are waiting for the freight
train, passing at a crawl, to clear. This does not appear to be a scene
about which a safety officer would smile approvingly. |
