Northeast beyond the Chinatown station -- visible
in the background, with an outbound train stopped there -- the Gold
Line comes down to surface level.
There were formerly extensive Southern Pacific facilities in this area,
strategically close to downtown Los Angeles and to its nearby commercial,
warehouse and
industrial districts. Railroad use, in diminished importance,
lasted until the early 1990s. The bases to the lower right supported a narrow pedestrian overpass that crossed
the many tracks that were once below. |
