LOS ANGELES METRO LIGHT RAIL
Pacific Electric Heritage

This view looks south at Washington, first stop on the outbound line after it gains the right of way once used by the Pacific Electric.  From Los Angeles out to Watts, just north of today's Imperial/Wilmington transfer station, the PE had four tracks.  Routes to multiple destinations used this speedway to reach places such as Redondo Beach, San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach and Santa Ana.  The three-way junction at Watts must have been an amazing place to watch an earlier era of electric rail action.

Passenger service ended on the old line in 1961; the Long Beach route was the last survivor of this once-huge network.
