The location of this photo is very similar to
that of the
scene shown on the opening page in this series, but the Manhattan
skyline is visible under considerably hazier conditions.
The
relocated Colgate Clock, for decades visible from Manhattan, is in view, somewhat obscured by the "Do Not Enter" sign and
its supporting post.
The clock is a symbol of Jersey City's industrial past. Once
upon a time, in the era of great ocean liners docking in Manhattan,
it was a sight to behold for passengers on the West Side Highway. The
manufacturing complex upon which it once stood has long since been
razed. Much, much has changed. |
