NEW YORK CITY HEAVY RAIL
Quiet, Desolate Station

An F train is ready to depart from the rather forlorn Smith-9th Sts. station on its route through Brooklyn.  Fewer and fewer heavy rail systems use two-person crews to operate a train, but such is standard on the New York City system.  The motorman waits at each station for the appropriate signal from the conductor that door-closing activity has been completed and that it's safe to proceed.

MTA is experimenting with a mostly-automated, single-man crew on the L train (old Canarsie Line), and hopes that its success will lead to expansion to other lines over the next couple of decades.
