LOS ANGELES METRO HEAVY RAIL
Inbound at North Hollywood

The train in this view is waiting at North Hollywood, Red Line terminal outbound.  It is soon to begin its journey to downtown Los Angeles; Union Station is about eleven miles away.  The Purple and Red Lines, like the area's three light rail routes, as well as an extensive bus system, are operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Construction of both subway branches was fraught with major technical problems, and with management oversight often sharply criticized in the process.  There were numerous cost overruns and significant delays.  The experience had a decidedly chilling effect on further expansion to the heavy rail system as it was originally contemplated, but things are looking up for future expansion.
