Unlike other areas with street crossings, the CTA right of way
in Wilmette is protected from unauthorized entry by gates that open
only to allow trains on the appropriate track to pass. This
safety feature was extracted by the community from the CTA when the line was converted
from overhead wire -- old North Shore heritage -- to third rail, several
decades ago.
Homes are
large here, and the trees are tall and stately.
