CHICAGO HEAVY RAIL
Paint on the Pillars

This photo is taken from the empty southbound platform at Adams/Wabash.  Each girder has three swatches of paint, with the colors denoting the lines that stop in this direction: Orange to Midway; Green to the South Side (two branches); and Purple, part-time express service up to Wilmette.  The Pink Line -- another color -- was still several years off.

Many decades ago, before the subways, before consolidation, trains from four different elevated railroad companies (serving multiple destinations) used the Loop, along with the traffic of two interurban railroads.
