CHICAGO HEAVY RAIL
Downtown, South of the Loop

A train heads toward the busier part of Downtown above Wabash in this scene.  The cross street is Congress, one block south of Van Buren.  Rust  pokes through the paint on the "L" structure.

This portion of the "L" is ancient, but it did not see CTA service for many decades after the Dearborn subway opened in 1943.  The North Shore interurban continued along this stretch until 1963; with its abandonment all rail service ceased.   The 1969 opening of the CTA line along the Dan Ryan Expy. resulted in restored activity.  In 1993 major route changes switched the Dan Ryan line into the State St. subway, and returned what is now called the Green Line to the Loop for the first time in more than half a century.  The newer Orange Line also passes along here.
