BOSTON HEAVY RAIL
Ashmont, Trolley Above

Ashmont is unique to the Boston system in that beyond the end of the route, a short light rail line serves as an extension to the subway.  The Mattapan High Speed Line goes about two and one half miles further out.  Both the Red Line and its extension utilize the right of way of a long-abandoned branch of the New Haven Railroad.

In this view, an old PCC trolley has just left for its outbound run.  Down below, beyond the last stop, the train in the distance has switched onto the inbound track, and will soon arrive to pick up passengers for the run back to Alewife.
