SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT RAIL
Trackage Beyond

The Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989 led to the tearing down of the double-deck freeway that had been built decades before over The Embarcadero.  The decision evolved to extend electric rail transit in both directions from Market St. in the median of the surface roadway, areas subject to immense transformation.

At some time, likely fairly soon, the tracks here and beyond Mission St. will carry the E-line, a second historic streetcar route.  It will go between Fisherman's Wharf and, initially, 4th & King.  Southeast of here the line will use the T-Third tracks after they arise from Muni Metro subway, marking a return to mixed presence of historic and regular light rail vehicles in passenger service.

Eleven additional PCC units acquired from the Newark city system will help support the new service, and relieve chronic overcrowding on the F-line.

In this holiday-season view a New Orleans car dwells on the storage track, headlight shining brightly.  The Bay Bridge is in the background.
