Looping Over Itself

This photo was taken from an inbound Red Line train just as it passed over the track that that train had been on moments before.  This is likely the only location in the country where both directions of a light (or heavy) rail route cross over the same line below.

Coming from Portland International, trains perform a slow, long, counterclockwise loop behind the camera to get up from the short, single-track portion below onto the original MAX line.  Switches and three tracks through Gateway/NE 99th Ave. Transit Center allow light rail runs to be sorted out properly.
