PORTLAND MAX LIGHT RAIL
Leaving Portland Airport

The Red Line was built in an unusual and innovative partnership with private enterprise, with the contemplation that massive building just to the east of Portland International would take place.  Airport MAX opened one day before the tragedy of September 11, 2001.  The resulting economic impact delayed much of the proposed development.

There is still much land for sale in this area, but  there has also been substantial construction of big-box and other shopping facilities nearby.  After the time of this photo, the Cascades station opened, considerably after the other stops on the line,  to serve the new activities in the district.
