PITTSBURGH LIGHT RAIL
Into Mt. Washington Tunnel

The Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel is about 3500 feet long.  Its electric rail history dates back over a century.  Buses began sharing the tunnel route  in 1977.  Highway-style traffic lights control transit movements along the joint running.   For the light rail enthusiast there is something rather demeaning about all this.  Two busy freight lines have overpasses just out from the northern portal.
