A Library-bound train has just departed Gateway, and the platform is empty of passengers.
Construction is underway on the North Shore Corridor, which will extend the "T" from this terminal into
a tunnel under
the Allegheny River. The new line will then continue on the other side on
a route that starts below grade level and then will go along an
elevated stretch, ending near the West End Bridge.
The addition to the "T" system involves reconstruction of the
current Gateway terminal, and two new stations on the North Shore.
The city's baseball and football stadiums, as well as substantial
new development, are in the area to be served. The 1.2-mile extension is
scheduled to open in 2011. Transit planners hope it is the
forerunner to further expansion, including out to the city's
airport. |
