A short freight heads south to service
petrochemical Bayonne in this scene. The CSX (formerly Conrail, formerly Lehigh
Valley) track parallels the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail for some distance,
and is an added bonus for the intrepid rail fan.
The transit route
itself here follows the right of way of the old Jersey Central main line,
which continued
through Bayonne and on across Newark Bay toward Elizabeth and beyond.
In an earlier era there were commuter rail stations at some of the places where today light
